Growing up I learned never to discuss money, religion, or politics. To this day, unless I know you can handle a conversation of that gravity, I’ll never bring that stuff up. It’s messy and too many people’s egos get hurt, and I’m not about to start wiping metaphorical tears. I respect everyone’s opinions, and most of all I respect mine enough not to shove it down anyone’s throat.
This election has been a wild ride, one filled with great shock and disbelief. I won’t go into detail on how I feel about it, but I will go into detail about my stand on health care. Along with all of the politics going on, much stress has been placed upon women and their access to free birth control. It’s crappy to know that such a major thing might just vanish for women in America. Free birth control is not a luxury, it’s a necessity for women everywhere. Planned Parenthood has been especially strained these past few months. Just a few weeks ago, House Speaker Paul Ryan said the GOP plans to defund Planned Parenthood under Trump’s presidency.
PP said, “‘Defunding’ Planned Parenthood is part of a larger agenda to shut down Planned Parenthood health centers and make it impossible to access safe, legal abortion in America.”
I’m writing this, not in anger towards Trump, but out of stress and maybe even a little bit of anxiety. The lack of care for PP has caused much fear to women (myself included), and the men who care about their women, because it’s such a helpful organization. So many young women rely on this kind of healthcare for contraception, STI screenings, pap tests, abortions, and well overall female care. Without it, we’re left with very little options, and even less affordable ones. With Inauguration Day just around the corner (literally hours away), there’s no better time to defend women’s rights. Don’t worry, you don’t have to march around in the hot sun or blistering cold for hours (although it wouldn’t hurt). You don’t even have to leave your house to help, shoot you don’t even have to get out of bed!
Here are some quick, easy, and fun ways to help out PP and the 2.5 million patients per year who might lose access.
Buy A New Sports Bra
It’s probably time you got a new one anyway! It’s a new year and one of your New Years resolutions might have been to hit the gym more often. So what better way to do it than with a sports bra from Naja? Naja is a lingerie and activewear company that will be selling their Active(ist) sports bra for $20 on Inauguration Day. Single mothers hand make these bras out of upcycled, recycled, and digitally printed fabric. $19 will go to Naja and $1 will be donated to Planned Parenthood!
Send A Tweet
Your voice (and tweets) do count, so make yourself heard! Send a Tweet to Paul Ryan and let him know how defunding Planned Parenthood makes you feel. Although you might want to give him a piece of your mind, you should refrain from sending expletives. Instead, PP recommends you send something like this:
“Hey @SpeakerRyan: #IStandwithPP because @PPFA health centers provide crucial healthcare to millions. Don’t defund &block patients from care”
Play A Game
Seriously, all you have to do is play Sperm Invaders! Defend your eggs from penises using your IUD spaceship. Sounds a little wacky, but it’s a great time killer. The Space Invaders parody allows you to donate to PP or buy merchandise after each game.
Buy A Tote Bag
Tote bags are fun and versatile. Throw your laptop in one or use it for grocery shopping. You can use them for literally anything. This special “We Who Choose to Stay and Fight” tote by Ginger Haus gives back 100& of its proceeds to Planned Parenthood. Each bag is $18 and tote-ally worth it (yes, I just went there). If you’re not a tote person, then you must be a coffee drinker. Buy a mug for $15 from the same site with the same quote on it. 100% of those earnings will also go to PP.
Buy A T-Shirt
Be a “Nasty Woman” and buy this damn t-shirt. It’s hip, it’s cool, and most importantly it will help Planned Parenthood. Each “Nasty Woman” shirt is $25. 50% of its proceeds will be donated to PP. This company has already donated over 100k to the clinic. So act now! You’ll look great and feel great.
Buy Another T-Shirt
There are 7 days in a week, and you simply can’t wear the same shirt twice. So what do you do? Buy as many as you can! This “The Future is Female” shirt design is based on the t-shirt made for Labyris Books, the first women’s bookstore in New York City which opened in 1972. It’s $30 and they will donate 25% of its sale proceeds to PP.
Okay, maybe some of this stuff isn’t for you, but you’re reading this post for a reason. I think that reason is because a part of you cares what happens to Planned Parenthood. Online shopping isn’t for everyone, we get it. How about donating directly (any amount helps!) — and under Mike Pence’s name. You might as well use his name, like the thousands of others! PP has received over 80k donations from “Mike Pence”. I think we can hit at least 100k by Inauguration Day.
Just remember that without Planned Parenthood far too many women will be left without healthcare. Please, please, please support the nonprofit. They need all of us now more than ever.
