In October of last year, Kim Kardashian was robbed at gunpoint in a luxurious Parisian apartment. Around 3am on a Monday, masked men forced their way into Kim’s temporary residence. After ransacking the place, they took off with millions of dollars worth of jewelry. Kim’s ankles and wrists were bound, and she was left with her mouth taped shut. The robbery took a toll on Kim for several months after. The level of stress she felt was shown in a glimpse through her absence from social media. Her break from posting updates, pictures, and Tweets was just a small representation of how she must have felt. Although this was a terrible incident that we wish upon no one, we have learned one very important thing.
After a three-month break, Kim K. returned to social media on Tuesday, January 3. The turmoil in her personal life left many fans upset, worried, and wishing her all the best. The Keeping Up With the Kardashians star broke her silence by posting an adorable family photo with the caption “family” on both Instagram and Twitter. She also responded to her fan’s excited tweets saying, “Haha ?? I missed you guys!” Through the suspense of her absence and the excitement of her return as the queen of social media, she taught us how to truly evaluate our lives. In a twisted way, the terror she faced might have helped her or her fans realize the importance of setting priorities in life.
“I think it’s just a wake-up call to make a lot of life adjustments,” Khloe Kardashian said on Ellen a little over a week after the robbery. “This is a really serious matter for Kim. I think that’s really personal as to when, that emotional terror, you could move on from that. I think for us it’s all a wake up call for all of us, but definitely just to make sure our sister’s OK.”
The message she shared with her fans is simple and to the point. Her caption “family” goes beyond one word under one picture. It clearly represents that no matter what happens, family is the most important thing. Whether it’s blood or a strong bond, at the end of the day family should always come first. Yes, even before all your “pals” on social media, because “likes” don’t keep you sane or safe.
To further her message on the importance of family, Kim shared a heartwarming two-and-a-half-minute clip to her app. In it, fans are shown a few moments of life at home for the Kardashian-West family. Saint’s firsts steps are beautifully shown, as well as North and her mom tubing in the snow, and West and Saint staring in awe at Christmas lights.
Taking a break from social media, even a short one, can be the best decision you’ll make this year. Start 2017 with a fresh start for real. You don’t have to leave forever or permanently delete your accounts, but a break can certainly help clear your mind. Without the distraction and the obvious yet unsaid competition on social media, this might be the help you need. Like Kim K. you might need to get away from it all, for three months or indefinitely. So do it. Your coolness factor won’t go down, and no one will hate you for it. Whatever you do, don’t wait for a traumatic experience to tell you how to prioritize.
“I think with everything that has happened in Kim’s life this year, she has really had to redefine her priorities. Time does heal and I think she’s in a much better place now,” Khloe Kardashian wrote on her app Tuesday, Jan. 3. “So I just want her to focus on her family and her own happiness this year.”
